How many are interested?  Classes and workshop ideas are listed in the newsletter.

Ideas for New Classes 2012
BEYOND THE BASICS CHOREOGRAPHY CLASSESThis approach to bellydance is a holistic one, as we strive to utilize dance as not only a physical tool for movement and energy flow but also as a means to create a story, inspire deep emotional transformation through the characters we create and engage our spiritual selves with love, purpose and meaning.

Our goal will be to create a new choreography together each term using the above principles to guide us along the way. Meditation, sharing tea in circle and developing our intuition in a safe space are non-dance activities that will also form part of this class.

(I encouraged students interested in this class to first take the basic Bellydancing to gain an understanding of the concepts we are working with in the Holistic Bellydance class; however exceptions may be made in certain cases.)
Choreography Ideas:
Veil choreograpy, dancing with a veil.
Sword choreograpy, dancing with a sword.
Cane Choreograpy, dancing a funky song with a cane, Cane songs usualy are very upbeat. Kinda makes fun of the traditional male cane dances.
Wings of Isis Choregrapy, dancing with wings.
Silk fans Choregraphy, dancing with fans.

MUDRAS

A mudra is a bodily posture or symbolic gesture that focuses and directs energy. The use of the mudras is quite common in Classical Indian dances. Mudras have the power to improve our health and vitality- physically, mentally , emotionally and spiritually. In my classes Mudras are used in conjunction with Cardio moves, core exercises, stretches and meditation and are thoroughly enjoyed by participants from all walks of life. But don't take my word for it, try them for yourself and notice how they make you fee.

Male Bellydancers

Many People are totally unaware of Male Bellydancers.

Men in the Middle East dance as much as women do. Bellydance isn’t limited to women nor was it ever a “women only” dance. As a society of artists and musicians we have to truly understand where this dance originated and what happened to it that shadowed the male dancer to begin with. Perhaps our own societal biases .  “The name alone is misleading but we’ve come to live with it and try to help turn it back into what it was…ethnic dance…not natives dancing with the part of their body containing their entrails…because in truth the term bellydance/Danse du ventre means just that. Colonials/Colonists were not embracing this the way we have as artists…and the idea of it being presented by a long haired, dainty woman, meek and mild has never sat well within the culture from which it came.”

You do not have to be a woman to sing and dance well. The idea or notion that only women can dance and sing could give way to many uncomfortable stereotypes .
Hollywood glorified bellydance in a very interesting way. We ourselves do not currently posses any videos or artifacts showing males being in this glorification…just women. Therefore the tough Debke & line dancers with their intricate steps adorning gorgeous cloaks, bolero jackets, turbans and capes are virtually unseen. It’s unfortunate because the male dancer captures audiences just as strongly as a female bellydancer. Most modern shows won’t go without one.
